Established in 1892, Port of Qingdao consists of 4 areas: Qingdao old port area, Huangdao oil port area, Qianwan new port area, and Dongjiakou port area. It is a comprehensive port, providing services of loading and unloading, storage, and logistics for containers, coal, crude oil, iron ore, grain, etc. International passenger service is also available. Having established trade relations with over 450 ports in more than 130 countries and regions across the world, it is an important hub for international trade and sea-going transportation in China’s Yellow River region and along the west bank of the Pacific. Port of Qingdao is always ready to accommodate the largest vessels in the world. It is now the world 7th largest port in total throughput and the world’s 8th largest port in container volume. Port of Qingdao is the world’s largest port for inbound iron ore, China’s largest port for inbound crude oil, and China’s 2nd largest port for international trade. It boasts the world’s highest productivity for the handling of container and iron ore. So far, 9 of the Fortune top 500 companies have joined hands with Qingdao Port Group.
In 2010, Qingdao Port Group realized total throughput of 350.12 million tons, up 11% year on year. Container volume reached 12.01 million TEU, growing by 17% over last year. With 1.3% of China’s total quay length, Qingdao Port Group realized 6.9% of the country’s total throughput. In 2010, Qingdao Port Group was ranked among China’s top 500 enterprises, China’s top 500 enterprises in service sector, and China’s top 200 enterprises in economic benefits. The port’s total throughput, container volume, and total assets all have been doubled compared that of 10th Five-Year Plan (2001-2005). During 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-2010), Qingdao Port Group handled a total of 1.45 billion tons of cargo, including 49.45 million TEU of containerized cargo, turned in charges and fees of 10.6 billion yuan, and created superior assets of 13.1 billion yuan. Cargoes going through the port brought about custom duties of 170 billion yuan. Qingdao Port Group has been the largest payer of local tax in Qingdao for 7 consecutive years and accounted for over half of Qingdao’s state-owned capital returns.
Since 1995, Qingdao Port Group has been erected as a brilliant model for China’s communications system and port industry, a Model in the National Civilized Industry Establishing Campaign, first National Quality Management Award, one of the first National Environment-Friendly Enterprises, first Yuanbaohua Enterprise Management Golden Award, Superlative Enterprise in Energy Conservation and Environment Protection, National Civilized Unit, May First Labor Diploma, National Award for Donation, totaling over 100 state-level honorary titles. Qingdao Port Group has cultivated a number of excellent staff represented by Mr. Xu Zhanchao, outstanding representative of new era’s industrial workers, and Mr. Xu Wannian and Mr. Pi Jinjun, excellent models of migrant workers.
The development of Qingdao Port Group has always been approved by leaders of the central government, Shangdong provincial government, Qingdao municipal government, and the Ministry of Transport. On 22 April 2009, President Hu Jintao, when inspecting Port of Qingdao for the 2nd time, highly commented that “for the 1st quarter, Qigndao Port Group carried forward the working class’s sense of master and made good achievements despite the difficulties. This did not come easy and I hope you will continue to exert yourselves”. Mr. Wu Bangguo, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress gave a hand-written remark on 27 Aug. 2008 that “Qingdao Port Group is an enterprise that I’m familiar with. It has been rejuvenated through reforms. Its success is largely attributed to Mr. Chang Dechuan. Since the reform and opening-up, development of ports in China has attracted much of the world’s attention. In 2008, total port throughput reached 5.8 billion tons, and container volume amounted to 128 million TEU. This would have been impossible without the exemplary role of Qingdao Port Group”. During the sessions of the National People’s Congress and the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in 2010, Premier Wen Jiabao praised once again that Qingdao Port Group is very important and has also cultivated a large number of talented employees. Its management and staff quality are very good. The enterprise is well managed”. Members of the Standing Committee of CPC Politburo, Jia Qinglin, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and He Guoqiang, spoke highly of and expressed high expectations for the development of Qingdao Port Group. Members of CPC Politburo, Wang Gang, Wang Lequan, Wang Zhaoguo, Liu Yunshan, Li Yuanchao, Zhang Gaoli, Zhang Dejiang, Yu Zhengsheng, Bo Xilai, etc., have all inspected Qingdao Port Group, met with staff, and give hand-written remarks. On 15 July 2007, the Publicity Department of CPC, All-China Federation of Trade Unions, Ministry of Transport, CPC Shandong Committee, and CPC Qingdao Committee jointly held the “Symposium on the Scientific Development Mode of Qingdao Port Group” and concluded that Qingdao Port Group successfully created a socialist enterprise management mode with Chinese characteristics: the Mode of Qingdao Port Group.
